5.6 EQ Rattles nerves and more in Tornado Country...

QUICK FACT:  In 2010, the OGS recorded 1,047 earthquakes in Oklahoma of which only 103 were reported as being "felt". Most of these quakes were of a very small magnitude and went unnoticed.

(Reuters) - Five homes were damaged late on Saturday in the largest earthquake to hit Oklahoma on record, emergency management officials said on Sunday.
The 5.6-magnitude earthquake's epicenter, located 44 miles east of Oklahoma City, was felt as far away as Wisconsin and South Carolina, but there were no serious injuries, officials said.

The largest earthquake previously recorded in Oklahoma was a 5.5-magnitude tremor in 1952, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake rippled north through Kansas and into Missouri, rattling windows and waking sleeping residents, though there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Of the five homes damaged in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, one appeared to be a total loss after its chimney crashed through the roof and its walls and foundation were split by tremors, said Joey Wakefield, emergency management director for the rural county.

The Great California Shakeout October 2011

shakeout.org
At 10:20 a.m. on October 20, 2011, millions of Californians will participate in the largest earthquake drill ever! Being prepared is your best, if not only defense against Mother Nature taking control.

Do you know where to go during an Earthquake ? what supplies you should have on hand afterward ? What if you are at work or school ? What should disabled people prepare for? These questions and SO much more are available at the Shakeout.org site.

As the East Coast found out abruptly on August 23 2011, California isn't the only place that has significant Earthquakes. In fact the East Coast is said to be one of those places that is ill prepared in the event of a larger more destructive event. The shakeout.org site has the date set for The Great Central U.S. Shakeout:  February 7, 2012 . Don't be scared... BE PREPARED !!!

Be in Control !!!!

Being prepared is the one thing you have control over when it comes to any type of emergency. Most people will make sure they have their insurance paid up so their homes are covered, yet being prepared to take care of yourself and your loved ones in the face of a disaster is usually something overlooked. A few questions you should ask yourself regarding preparedness are:
  1. Do you have enough water on hand to last at least 72 hours for each member of your family?
  2. Do you have a communication plan (out of area messenger to relay information) and meeting place plan in place for your family?
  3. Do you have gear in place to secure your pets and/or transport and care for them away from home?
